Is your rent too high?

More affordable housing is coming to Syracuse.

Friday, folks broke ground on the Salina Crossing project. The development will feature 49 high-quality apartments in different areas of the city.

Twenty of those apartments will be on the corner of North McBride and Butternut.

The rent will be reasonable for families whose income is 60 percent or less than the area median income.

“So we are really talking about folks who are working but can’t afford the market rate apartments,” said Ben Lockwood with Housing Visions.

Paul Driscoll, Commissioner of the Department of Neighborhood and Business Development, says the project balances what he calls market rate apartments being developed downtown.

“There is a high-end residential boom downtown,” said Driscoll. “We need to preserve affordability there as well.”

Salina Crossing is also building apartments on North Townsend Street, Hawley Avenue, South Salina Street and McLennan Avenue in the city.
